They are not in the right type of workplaces. So your uncle who is in management at a paper mill or your cousin who works in a municipal government office are not going to get it. The thing is, you need to understand that not all work outside of Academia is created equal. I think some PhDs get mixed messages about this because they talk to family members or others who don’t understand our world. It might be hard to believe, but there are a lot of people out there who respect your PhD.
